The ancient town of Chipping Campden has crooked medieval buildings and a quintessential chocolate-box feel. A favourite for those wanting to experience the romance of bygone times.
Chipping Campden is located in the beautiful Cotswolds in the South West of England and is one of the most beautiful and historic wool market towns of the North Cotswolds. It is famous for the curving high street and mellow stone houses and sits in a fold in the Cotswold Hills, straddling the River Cam in an area of outstanding natural beauty, the surrounding countryside is breathtaking. There are many fine pubs, restaurants, cafes, luxury delis, boutique shops, antiques and gifts just a moments walk from Jacinabox and Cloud Nine.
Our pubs and cafes all have outside seating and beer gardens for the summer months and cosy open fires in the winter. The town has changed little over the years and is still the focus for much of the local rural community. The town is associated with the Arts and Crafts movement and offers a wide range of attractions for visitors, including medieval architecture, historic gardens and monuments, regular markets and unique shops.
Tiny towns with crooked streets and yellow-stoned, golden-coloured houses, the Cotswolds is England's quintessential storybook countryside. There are also numerous beautiful, quaint little villages waiting to be explored within a short drive. Cultural events are held throughout the year, such as the Chipping Campden Music Festival, the Open Gardens weekend and the Robert Dover's Olimpick Games, described as “the first stirrings of Britain's Olympic beginnings”. Stratford upon Avon and Blenheim Palace, the birthplaces of Shakespeare and Churchill, are cultural gems situated nearby, as are the dreaming spires of Oxford. Cheltenham and the famous racing festival lie 15 miles away.
An archway from Chipping Campden’s High Street leads into a peaceful cul-de-sac which is home to a small number of properties, including Cloud Nine and Jacinabox. This much loved market town has a variety of pubs, tea rooms and independent shops to enjoy, as well as impressive architecture including the 17th century Market Hall in the centre of the town and the East Banqueting House just a short walk away. This picturesque town is surrounded by stunning countryside, with many walks and cycle routes on its doorstep, none so famous as that of the Cotswold Way long distance walking trail, a 100 mile long trail which links Chipping Campden to Bath.
Chipping Campden is one of the main market towns in the North Cotswolds, built by medieval traders with wealth created from the wool trade. With many thatched cottages, this is one of the most picturesque towns in the region. A notable feature of the town is the Market Hall which was built in 1627. Originally thought to be used in the wool trade, the main function of the hall was actually to give shelter to local cheese, poultry and butter sellers.
The High Street is relatively small, taking just five minutes to walk from one end to the other, and it has a number of well-regarded eateries ranging from tea houses to dining pubs and restaurants. This main street curves in a shallow arc which is flanked on both sides by terraces of ancient houses, each house having its own embellishments. This feature of the town is one of the reasons why, in 1970, the street was officially designated as a conservation area.
Chipping Campden marks one end of the Cotswolds Way which is a 102 mile National Trail linking Chipping Campden to Bath. For the majority of the trail it follows the Cotswold escarpment which gives the walker fantastic views of the surrounding scenery. The Way passes through many traditional villages and close to historical sites including Sudeley Castle near Winchcombe and Hailes Abbey. The countryside along the Way is very diverse, ranging from wildflower meadows to beech woodlands, providing visitors with perfect examples of Britain's stunning landscape.
